CSULB College of Natural
Sciences and Mathematics
BASIC SAFETY REQUIREMENTS - OFFSITE WORKERS
The College
administration is required by law (Cal/OSHA and Cal/EPA regulations) and
University policy to ensure that all work directed by College employees complies
with established health, safety and environmental policies. In lieu
of the full employee training program, a careful review of and adherence to
this two-page safety guide has been developed for off-campus employees/volunteers
not engaged in unusually hazardous work, or work involving the use of chemicals.
All employees/volunteers are,
however, welcomed and strongly encouraged to participate in the full CNSM new employee
safety training program.
1) EMPLOYEE
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITY: Each employee/volunteer is responsible for personally
observing and, if a supervisor, enforcing the health, safety and environmental
policies outlined in this document. If
health and/or safety questions arise, feel free to call the CNSM Safety Office,
(562) 985-5623 or the CSULB Office of University Safety and Risk Management at (562)
985-2366. The CNSM Safety Office is
located on the CSULB campus in room PH3-018.
Additional information is available on the CNSM Safety Website at http://www.cnsm.csulb.edu/services/safety/index.htm.
2) EMPLOYEE INTRODUCTORY
SAFETY TRAINING: Your introductory safety training will not be considered
complete until you fill out a CSULB College
of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Safety Program Form and return it, signed,
to the CNSM Safety Office at:
CNSM Safety
Office
California State
University, Long Beach
Long Beach, CA
90840-4501
You must do this
within 7 days of receiving this packet. Beyond this general new employee
introductory safety training regimen, SUPERVISORS
are responsible for ensuring that that all their supervised personnel receive
the appropriate job-specific safety training and supervision. If
field work is involved, the CNSM Field
Trip/Project Safety Manual shall be used as a guide and the project
supervisor must document the field project safety training on the standard
sign-up form.
3) INJURY OR
INCIDENT REPORTING: If YOU are injured while on CSULB
business, it may be classified as an "industrial accident" covered by
"Worker's Compensation".
Notify your supervisor in the event you are injured. CSULB supervisors
must determine if you qualify as a covered employee and if so, which employer (University
or Foundation) is responsible for Workers Compensation Insurance. NOTE - ANYTIME YOU HAVE SAFETY CONCERNS ABOUT
YOUR CSULB WORK, OR NEW PROBLEMS/THREATS ETC. HAVE DEVELOPED OR MAY DEVELOP,
NOTIFY YOUR SUPERVISOR AND/OR CNSM SAFETY.
We will respond to the new problems appropriately.
4) FOOD, DRINK
AND SMOKING: Food or drink may not be stored or
consumed in a location where the materials could be contaminated with any toxic
material. Smoking is prohibited in all State
of California vehicles.
5)
CHEMICALS/HAZARDOUS MATERIALS: If you use chemicals, you must participate in
the full General Safety Training (one-hour “live” training given by CNSM Safety
Personnel). If you ship or carry
non-hazardous samples or other materials to CSULB, the materials must be
labeled in conformance with our standard policy. Whatever the material is, it must be clearly
labeled. Rolls of self adhesive
"non-hazardous" labels are available.
One such label will suffice to label a box containing hundreds of sample
vials. Contact CNSM Safety if in doubt
as to your labeling scheme.
6) PHYSICAL
HAZARDS: All items used
“on the job” must employ safety features and warning labels as required by
Cal/OSHA. Belts and chains must be
guarded. Dangerous voltages, lasers,
U.V. light sources etc. MUST be adequately shielded to prevent injury. Employ personal protective equipment
(eyewear, gloves, earplugs, etc.) as appropriate.
