COLLEGE OF NATURAL SCIENCES

“Green Sheet” Continuing Education: Health, Safety and Environmental Information

DATE:            October 18, 2002

TO:                 ALL CNSM FACULTY, STAFF, FOUNDATION & STUDENT EMPLOYEES

FROM:           Kristin Hunter & Jeff Mellon, CNSM Safety Officers

SUBJECT:     SAFETY MEMO 60

DON’T PUT UNWANTED EQUIPMENT/FURNITURE/JUNK INTO HALLWAYS!!

This makes the halls unsafe and also could get us ticketed by the State Fire Marshal.  If you would like to get rid of unwanted furniture/equipment etc. please do NOT push it into the halls. Custodians do not remove such items from the halls.  Instead, call your Department Technician, the Science Shop x54841, or Associate Dean of Facilities Bob Loeschen (x54939) to arrange for the removal of the unwanted item(s).

BIOLOGY & CHEM LAB CLASS/PREP MANUALS:  We continue to find Lab Instructors and GAs repeating the same errors each year with respect to safety e.g. not wearing goggles when adjusting the pH of buffers, not knowing which chemicals to collect as hazardous waste etc. Please insert this information into your lab manuals (hand write it in if need be) so that these employees (and students as well) can work safely.  We would be happy to review your manuals for you if you are unsure of the regulations or are writing new manuals.

LIQUID NITROGEN/GAS CYLINDER HANDLING:  Please remember that students/faculty/staff may not obtain or transport these materials until they have attended the CNSM Gas Cylinder/LN2 Safety training class, and passed the test.  Call x55623 to sign up.

IF YOU CALL 911: please remember to send someone out to the nearest road (usually E. Campus Drive) to flag the emergency vehicles down and guide them to the proper location.  Emergency response crews have a very difficult time navigating our halls and locating the correct room.  Note: CNSM Safety now has a wheelchair.

YOUR STUDENTS MUST KNOW HOW TO HANDLE SPILLS IN YOUR ABSENCE!

Please make sure your students know how to handle spills of varying magnitude and hazards, according to what is present in your location. Tell your students that the yellow SAFETY CABINET in the hall of PH2 near rm. 209 contains spill pillows, inert absorbent, plastic bags, goggles, gloves, glove chart for checking compatibility, chemical reference book, SPILL CLEANUP INSTRUCTIONS etc.  Any PH 1 or 2 key will open this cabinet. We will soon be posting the insides of lab doors with a “spill response” poster. Call 911 if needed!

RECOMBINANT DNA WORK:  You must obtain approval from the Institutional Biosafety Committee prior to beginning a project involving recombinant DNA.  Please submit the appropriate application (available from the CNSM Safety Website) to the CNSM Safety Office if you wish to begin working with recombinant DNA.  If you are already performing this work and have not yet filed an application with the CNSM Safety Office, please discontinue your work and contact the CNSM Safety Office (x55623) immediately.

RULE CHANGE FOR RUNNING AN UNATTENDED REACTION/REFLUX/DISTILLATION:  If you must leave an apparatus running unattended, post the outside of the laboratory door with your name and emergency telephone number, the full names of the chemicals involved and their hazards (e.g. tetrahydrofuran, flammable), location of the apparatus (e.g. fumehood, NE corner lab etc.).  An easy-to-use “Unattended Reaction” form is available from our website (go to CSULB.edu, then CNSM, then Safety Offices).
