BOOKMARK
THIS WEBSITE & REDUCE YOUR WORKLOAD: You can now
refer students to our safety website instead of giving them repeated verbal
instructions regarding various issues: http://www.cnsm.csulb.edu/services/safety/index.htm This website has information such as where to
go when injured; safety training instructions; important policies and
procedures; forms such as incident report forms, “Student Safety Instruction
and Verification” forms and signup sheets; safety manuals including field trip
safety; links to MSDS information on almost any chemical; etc.
REDUCE
LEGAL LIABILITY; CNSM SAFETY TRAINING FOR STUDENTS:
Please send all students who work unsupervised in labs (project workers,
grad students etc.) to your Department Office for Safety Training. Refer them to our website for more
information and the most recent “live” training dates!
FIELD
TRIP SAFETY: The new “Field Trip Safety Manual” is
available from the website and also from your Department office and the CNSM
Safety Office. Trip leaders, please
review the applicable issues with your class and have them sign the signup sheet
found at the end of the manual (signup sheets are also available from our
website). It’s a good idea to also collect emergency contact phone numbers from
the students. Please give the signup sheet to your Department Office prior to
departure.
DISCIPLINARY ACTION UPDATE: Keeping
in line with University cheating/plagiarism policies, research data acquired by
means prohibited by law or CNSM/University policy may be disallowed toward
academic credit/publication. Examples
include research tasks performed with willful disregard to safety and/or environmental
regulations; collection of data via unauthorized SCUBA diving (non-compliant
with the Ocean Studies Institute Manual); non-permitted specimen collection;
etc. Faculty advisers are asked to be
vigilant for such activities, and take appropriate action. Contact CNSM Safety at (562)985-5623 or the
Office of the Dean for details.
CONTACT
LENSES & OUR GOGGLE POLICY: CNSM employees and students MAY wear contact
lenses while working with hazardous liquids or solids as long as proper
chemical splash goggles are also worn.
The CNSM goggle policy requires each person to wear fully enclosed,
indirectly vented, flexible chemical splash goggles whenever engaged in one or
both of the following activities:
1. Opening or otherwise handling open containers
of liquids or solids that are capable of injuring the eyes (acids, caustics,
poisons, carcinogens, solvents, organic peroxides, boiling water, highly
reactive chemicals, etc.).
2. Occupying or traversing the “splash zone” of
someone working with the above materials. In CNSM labs, this typically means
that one individual handling injurious materials in a laboratory necessitates
the use of chemical splash goggles by all lab occupants.
