Institutional Data and Information - University Level (CSULB)

CSU Long Beach's annual impact on the Los Angeles region is enormous. Annual spending related to CSU Long Beach in the Los Angeles region ($574 million) generates a total impact of $1 billion on the regional economy. This impact sustains more than 15,700 jobs in the region, and generates nearly $58 million per year in tax revenue. Even greater-more than $2 billion of the earnings by alumni from CSU Long Beach are attributable to their CSU degrees.

CSULB Recognition and Awards Information

California State University, Long Beach Ranked No. 3 Among Top Public Universities in the West by U.S. News

For the third consecutive year, California State University, Long Beach has been ranked third among the top public master's universities in the west by U.S.News & World Report in its 2007 edition of America's Best Colleges Guide.

Included among the 63 western master's universities ranked by the magazine in its top tier, Cal State Long Beach once again was among the top 25 percent of 123 public and private universities in its category in the region.

The Princeton Review Ranks CSULB Among Best Value Public Colleges

CSULB has been ranked the No. 3 best value public college in the nation by The Princeton Review. The campus is featured in the "Top 10 Best Value Public Colleges" list in the 2007 edition of its book America's Best Value Colleges, which was released March 28, 2006.

CSULB Receives 'Best in the West' Designation in Princeton Review's 2007 Edition of Best 361 Colleges

"What is so significant about this ranking is the fact that it is based on the opinions of those we serve - the students at Cal State Long Beach," said CSULB President F. King Alexander.

Academics - California State University, Long Beach excels in numerous areas: science, engineering, art, communications, music, theater, nursing, nutrition, business and education are those students mention most.

CSULB Freshman Targeted Data

Computer Use among CSULB entering Freshmen

In 1997 55% of CSULB entering Freshman reported using a personal computer frequently. By 2004, 85% of entering Freshman reported frequent computer use. [CSULB Freshman Trends 1997-2004 Slide 17]

In 1997 there appeared to be a digital divide among entering CSULB Freshmen with 44% of Latinos, 51% Blacks, 54% Asians and 67% Whites reporting frequent computer use. By 2004, frequent computer use increases and the digital divide between ethnic groups shrinks significantly with 78% of Latinos, 88% Blacks, 86% Asians and 88% Whites reporting frequent computer use. Working to Pay for College Expenses

Approximately 55% of CSULB Freshmen (2004) report that they are working to pay for college expenses. [CSULB Freshman Trends 1997-2004 Slide 19]

Approximately 35-38% of CSULB Freshman (2004) report that they work more than 10 hours per week while only 14-23% report studying more than 10 hours per week. [CSULB Freshman Trends 1997-2004 Slide 22]

In 2005 11% of Freshman reported working 11-15 hours/week, 13% reported working 16-20 hours/week and 14.5% reported working over 20 hours/week. This translates into: Approximately 38% of our 2005 Freshman reported working more than 10 hours/week while in school. [Student Assessment Findings - Freshman 2005 Survey]

Health Indicators

Between 55-68% of Freshmen (2004) reported "feeling depressed during the last year" (before entering CSULB). Between 43-53% of Freshmen said they were planning to seek personal counseling. [CSULB Freshman Trends 1997-2004 Slide 24]

Between 44-53% of Freshmen (2004) reported they were in "emotional good health." Between 38-57% reported they were in "physical good health." [CSULB Freshman Trends 1997-2004 Slide 23]
