Single Subject (SS) Credential Program

The Science Education Department offers advising and courses to aid undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students in earning a California Science Teaching Credential to teach middle school and/or high school science. At CSULB, the SS Teacher Education Program includes courses in the student's teaching subject area, in Secondary Education (EDSE) and in Single Subject Education (EDSS).

Students are able to receive general information brochures by calling the Single Subject Teacher Education Program office in the College of Education at (562) 985-7622 or by visiting the Department of Teacher Education website. Specific questions regarding the Secondary Science Teaching Credential can be answered at the College of Education Single Subject Credential Program website and the Science Credential Program website, or by contacting the Science Teaching Credential Advisor, Professor Tim Williamson (twillia8@csulb.edu). Course descriptions for relevant courses offered through our Department (EDSS 300C and SCED 450) can be found in University Catalog Course Descriptions page.

Advising Hours

Tim Williamson is the Science Education Single Subject Advisor. You can stop by his office (HSCI-218) during open advising hours (without an appointment) during the following days/times:

  • Tuesdays, 1:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Wednesdays, 12:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Thursdays, 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Information Sessions

There are regular Science Credential Information Sessions each semester held in the Jensen SAS center (HSCI-164). At these sessions, you will hear about the program and have the opportunity to ask questions. General topics include:

  • What it takes to get a Science Teaching Credential at CSULB and teach middle or high school science in California;
  • What sorts of classes you would take as part of the program, including EDSS 300C, Introduction to Teaching Science;
  • What funding is available to support your teacher preparation;
  • How you can learn more about what it takes to be a science teacher.

The Fall, 2011 schedule is as follows:

  • Tuesday, September 20th @ 3:00 pm in HSCI-164 (SAS Center)
  • Thursday, October 13th @ 4:00 pm in HSCI-164 (SAS Center)
  • Wednesday, November 16th @ 1:30 pm in HSCI-164 (SAS Center)
  • Wednesday, December 7th @ 11:00 am in HSCI-164 (SAS Center)
