Association of Future Science Educators Still Going Strong!

Association of Future Science Educators (AFSE) logo

This year will be the seventh year of our Association of Future Science Educators (AFSE). This club meets once per month and has presenters on a wide range of topics of interest to preservice K-12 teachers. The club has been a student chapter of the National Science Teachers Association since April 2003. We were granted student chapter status with the California Science Teachers Association in 2008, the first student chapter to have that distinction! Students who are active members of AFSE will receive a discount on their CSTA membership dues the following year. Students can attend 3 events per year for a $5 discount or 6 events per year for a $10 discount. Students are not limited to our monthly AFSE meetings to meet this requirement, they may attend a variety of science education professional development opportunities that are recognized by AFSE. We are excited to have this partnership and look forward to having our CSULB students become active members of their state and national science teaching organizations.

During 2007-2008 more than 250 students participated in club events. Three students earned the CSTA discount by participating in more than 3 sponsored activities. This isn’t too bad considering we didn’t get CSTA Student Chapter status until spring semester. Current students, alumni and practicing teachers are all welcome to participate.

Meetings for fall semester are already scheduled. With many returning presenters we know this will be an exciting, informative semester of events!

RSVP online to attend events. Meetings are 6:00-8:00pm. Pizza and announcements at 6:00pm immediately followed by the program.
