Science Education Newsletter 2007

Greetings and welcome back to another school year! We've been busy with various grants and projects. The department will be growing as we are doing a search for an elementary science educator and we'll be moving into a new building.

The department continues to thrive. We've done workshops on and off-campus for preK-12 teachers, had close to 200 youngsters on campus for a Summer Science Camp, we've successfully written several grants. One will have our elementary science methods students working with kids at Kettering Elementary School, another has us working with K-2 teachers in Montebello and Garvey School Districts while another will be investigating how visitors interact with live animal exhibits at aquarium. We've partnered with the College of Education on two grants, one to help CSULB faculty learn the most effective methods for teaching English Language Learners and one to help continuation high school teachers earn their single subject credential. On top of all that we've been active presenting at conferences and writing papers (see the Productivity Report to see how active!). One of our new endeavors this year will be the implementation of a seminar series. Our target audience for the seminar will be faculty and graduate students but we welcome alumni, area teachers and credential students as well. We hope you will be able to join us for one or more of the events in the series.

As usual we like to brag about the successes of our students. You'll see that some of our students have won awards. Our Master's students are doing great. We had three finish their thesis this year and we've accepted a strong group to join the program this fall.

We hope you enjoy reading about our activities and learning about our students and alumni. The department wants to be a resource to our alumni and our community; we hope that you would want to be a resource to us. Keep in touch with us via email (dalexand@csulb.edu) and our alumni database and let us know what we can do to help you. Please consider making a gift to the Science Education Department to support our students and our programs. Your contributions of time, talents and money help enrich our programs and provide our students with a superior experience.
