NSF Grant With Cerritos College
Teaching Secondary School Scholars Program

CSULB is a partner with Cerritos College and John Glenn High School (Norwalk-La Mirada) on a National Science Foundation grant to prepare secondary math and science teachers. TS3P Scholars are admitted to the program while at Cerritos. The focus of the grant is to recruit and prepare future math/science teachers while providing the scholars with mentoring, advising, counseling, early fieldwork and professional development opportunities. TS3P Scholars do fieldwork at John Glenn High School (observations during year one, observing, tutoring and teaching during year 2), take an introduction to education class at Cerritos, work with mentors on all three campuses (John Glenn, Cerritos and CSULB). Scholars are taken to professional teaching conferences each year. In spring 2006 the group attended the National Science Teachers Association annual conference in Anaheim. In fall 2006 the group attended the California Mathematics Council conference in Palm Springs. TS3P Scholars participate in future science teacher club events and meet their CSULB colleagues prior to transferring to our campus. It is a goal of the grant to provide a seamless transition from Cerritos to CSULB for the completion of the major and credential. One student has already transferred to CSULB and three more will be coming to The Beach in spring 2007.
