A Head Start on Science 2006

A Head Start on Science

The year 2006 marks the tenth anniversary of the "A Head Start on Science" Project at CSULB. A grant from the US Department of Health & Human Services originally provided support for the development of a Teacher's Guide of over 100 activities, design of a week-long workshop plan, and preparation of a project video, as well as two summers of training for teachers in Long Beach and Syracuse, NY. Since that time, well over 600 teachers have participated in summer workshops on the CSULB campus. Subsequent support from the American Honda Foundation enabled the project to train 21 teams of leaders from across the US, to set up training centers at locations coast to coast, and to establish the National Center for Science for Young Children at CSULB.

A Head Start on Science

From June 23-30, 2006, some thirty teachers of young children convened at CSULB to participate in this year's summer institute. Daily "sense of wonder" hands-on science activities were led by our experienced staff -- Ray Casillan, Deborah Greenwade and Cynthia Meyer, assisted by Isabel Delgadillo, workshop facilitator. We were delighted to have Sue Bixler, Lead Teacher of Norwalk-La Mirada's First 5 Program join us this summer as a volunteer instructor/facilitator.

Teachers of young children who may be interested in the Summer 2007 workshop, tentatively scheduled for June 25-29th, are encouraged to contact Project Director Bill Ritz via e-mail (wcritz@csulb.edu) or by telephone (562) 985-4802 for more detailed information.
