The San Bernardino Mountains include the highest peak in southern California, San Gorgonio at 11,895 feet above sea level. These mountains were formed by the shifting of the North American tectonic plate past the Pacific tectonic plate along the San Andreas Fault, which cuts through the mountains near Gorgonio Pass and along the southern base of the mountains approaching Cajon Pass. Mount San Gorgonio and other peaks, ridges, and valleys of the San Bernardino Mountains trend east-west due to the movement along the San Andreas and numerous lesser faults. This east-west trend is partly responsible for the rain-shadow effect that has formed the Mojave Desert. In addition, these mountains form a barrier to the inland flow of the atmosphere from the Los Angeles region, trapping a variety of air pollutants in the Inland Empire region south of the San Bernardino Mountains. The network of highways and four-wheel drive roads is extensive throughout the San Bernardino Mountains, connecting the main populations centers of Crestline, Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs, Big Bear Lake and Big Bear City to each other. Opportunities for camping and hiking are bountiful.
For this web site, the San Bernardino Mountains are divided into southeast and west regions. (Time and money did not permit better coverage of these mountains in the Big Bear area - hopefully to be included in the future.) You can click on these regions on the map above to go directly to photographs of each part of the San Bernardino Mountains, or simply scroll down this page to see the same photographs.
