Jackie Chavez awarded Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar

Jackie Chavez, a senior majoring in Geology, is one of 77 CSU students selected as a Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Scholar. The award provides $3,000 to support activities that will prepare Ms. Chavez to enter a doctoral program, including visiting doctoral granting institutions and attending the Annual Meeting of the Geological Society of America. The program also will provide additional support for her to participate in a summer research internship at a doctoral granting institution during the summer 2008. In addition, Ms. Chavez has been chosen as an American Geological Institute Minority Participation Program Scholar. The award includes a $1000 scholarship and a professional development award of $575 to cover the costs of summer field geology camp and professional society memberships. Stan Finney has serves as Ms. Chavez's faculty advisor/sponsor for both programs.

In addition, she has been awarded an American Geological Institute's Minority Scholarship for the amount of $1,575. The scholarship is intended to support professional development activities, including costs for a Summer Field Geology course and for memberships in professional societies.
