College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Academic Advising Center

Mission:

The College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (CNSM) Academic Advising Center is committed to helping students graduate in a timely manner with a highly-valued degree from California State University, Long Beach. This is accomplished through excellent academic advising, and providing support services and resources, while partnering with CNSM students to identify and achieve their educational and career goals.

  • Provide accurate information about academic programs, major-specific declaration requirements, and resources.
  • Assist with appropriate course selection and sequencing to help students maintain timely progress toward degree completion.
  • Assist in developing short-term and long-term goals, and collaborate with students to identify strategies for achieving those goals by facilitating decision-making and problem solving.
  • Help navigate academic requirements, policies, and procedures, ensuring that students understand their roles in completing degree requirements.
  • Encourage students to utilize additional support services by facilitating appropriate referrals and career planning.
  • Work closely with the Jensen Student Access to Science and Math (SAS) Center, CNSM faculty, and departments and student services across campus.

Walk-in Hours Update:

The schedule for the Spring 2014 Walk-In is available on the right. Please note the following exceptions to the Walk-In and Appointment Schedules:

4/22 - No A.M Walk-In

4/23 - A.M. Walk-In Begins at 10 am.

First Year Students

Make sure you have completed your Mandatory Freshman Advising (MFA). Your registration hold will not be lifted until you complete your portion! Questions? Click Here for more information.

Need Tutoring?

The Jensen SAS Center Spring 2014 Tutoring has begun! Get extra help on various math, chemistry, biology and physics courses from peer tutors. This service is also **FREE** Please see the current schedule for days/times/rooms and subjects offered.

In addition to the Jensen SAS Center tutoring - there are various other resources on campus where you can recieve extra help at minimal or no cost! Take advantage of all the things your campus has to offer.

Interested in Health Professions?

The Health Professions Advising Office offers workshops for the various interests within health professions. These preparation workshops go over the general information you need to know to be prepared! For those further along in the process, there are also Personal Statement as well as Application workshops that help to guide you through the process.

Next Chemistry Placement Test (CPT): June 23rd (Deadline to Register is June 6th, 214)

Anyone wishing to enroll in CHEM 111A for the Summer/Fall of 2014 Semester must take and pass the CPT. For students currently enrolled in CHEM 90 for SPRING 2014, the CPT will be administered as part of your course.

To register, please visit the Testing, Evaluation & Assessment website. The Online Registration option in in the upper right corner.

If you have questions regarding how passing the CPT can impact your major - please feel free to make an appointment with one of our advisors!

Jumpstart Chemistry

Jump Start Chemistry is a custom-designed preparatory course for the Chemistry Placement Test (CPT) required for all students taking chemistry at CSULB. The course is an intense 45-hour workshop and covers critical topics from the CPT that are necessary to succeed in general chemistry. The CPT is given on the last day of class.

Office Hours

We are open Monday – Friday: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. We recommend stopping by during our walk-in hours, or booking an appointment. Please see section below for instructions on scheduling an appointment.

This Walk-In Schedule begins on Monday, January 27th.

Monday: 9:00 am – 12:30 pm (HSCI 161) and 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm (HSCI 164F)

Tuesday: 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (HSCI 166)

Wednesday: 9:00 am – 12:30 pm (HSCI 166) and 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm (HSCI 164F)

Thursday: 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm (HSCI 161)

Friday: 8:30 am – 12:00 pm (HSCI 164F)
