Freshman Resources

Success in your freshman year is key constructing a strong foundation
on which to build your academic and professional careers in the sciences
or mathematics. We want you to be successful and have amassed many
resources to support you both academically and socially during this year
of many transitions.
We will begin by discussing the
importance of
Advising. We have
advising available for you at the
departmental, college and university
levels.
Advising is for everyone - make a point of seeking advice when you
are struggling with a course, planning for next semester's schedule,
looking for internships and research opportunities and eventually
planning for your transition from college to graduate school or the
workplace.
Before you know it, you will have to begin thinking about planning for your future semesters at
CSULB. In order to register for your spring classes, all first-time freshmen will be required to attend
an academic advising workshop. If you are part of a special program such as President's Scholars,
University Honors Program, Learning Alliance, EOP, or the Center for Student Athletes, you will receive
advising as part of your program requirements. CNSM freshmen not enrolled in a special program will
receive academic advising through the Jensen SAS Center and additional advisement from their CNSM major
advisor. You will receive information about freshman mandatory advising by e-mail in mid-October of your
first semester at the Beach!
Next, let's discuss seeking resources for help with your courses - learning assistance resources. The
college offers peer mentors and tutoring to assist you with the academic challenges you will face along the
road to obtaining a science or math degree. Everyone hits bumps in the road and many students experience
these bumps for the first time as College Freshmen. Don't agonize and don't give up - Seek HELP! The
College is here to help - stop by the Jensen Student Access to Science and Math Center (SAS) and let
the folks who work there give you a helping hand. If you are looking for a different variety of support -
perhaps with study, organizational or test-taking skills, the Learning Assistance Center at the university
level has the help for you. Visit their website or drop by to see all they have to offer.
Whatever your challenge - We Can Help!
The most important things you can do in your freshman year are to organize your schedule, attend class, do
all homework, study regularly, engage in the life of the college, seek help as soon as you need it and don't
give up! There will be tough times, but help is here for you - simply reach out and ask.
Everyone needs
help from time to time in college.
Put your pride aside and seek help when you need it.
